Agency playbook

Website-as-a-Service Templates

Website as a Service can turn one-off web projects into recurring revenue, but only if the recurring fee buys something real. A client will not keep paying simply because the agency prefers subscription income.

Make the subscription earn its renewal

The model works best when production is standardized and the client receives an ongoing operating service: hosting, maintenance, agreed edits, forms, booking, analytics or another clearly defined layer. The bundle matters more than the label “WaaS.”

Lab note: Sell processes and outcomes you can influence. Avoid guaranteed rankings, revenue, review volume or unverified software claims.

Put it into practice

Choose a repeatable market

Standardization works better when client needs share a genuine pattern.

Separate launch from ongoing work

Be clear about setup and the monthly service.

Define ownership and exit terms

Explain what happens to the site and assets if the subscription ends.

Model support honestly

Small edits and requests can consume margin if the boundaries are vague.

Use templates as production tools

Do not confuse efficient delivery with giving every client the same generic site.

Keep the offer simple enough to improve

A useful first version needs a clear beginning, a recurring operating rhythm and defined boundaries. Document what the client supplies, what the agency does, what the software does and what happens when something falls outside the normal workflow. That clarity helps sales, onboarding and retention at the same time.

Recurring revenue is strongest when recurring work exists. Design the offer so both sides can explain why the subscription continues after launch day.
